People aim for happiness, love, and well being. Yet for some, the vulnerability and unpredictable nature of letting go, in order to experience all this, may be too much. Instead, they get in their own way and choose what they have always done––even though it means remaining alone and taking half-steps instead of full steps.

We met in our youth
In a house on the hill
Our friends still circle our lives
Faces now older
We gather to reckon our days

There’s a comfort in friends
A trust you assume
That the circle is healthy and well
So, I gave you my thoughts
And my heart fell into a spell
The music like wine
It captured a time
You flashed me that stare
As if no one were there

Days turned to weeks
And weeks into years
Your hand brought me close to your side
Our eyes spoke of stories
No other had pulled from the tide

No longer observing
A life you could live
You stood at the edge of the light
But the shadows and fears
Had given you comfort and home
The music like wine
It captured a time
You gave me that stare
As if no one were there

One hand on your heart
One hand on the score
A game you had hidden so well
Master of smile
You change as your shadows require

I’m king of my castle
You shout from the room
Ah, the night will be troubled and long
Moon on the wane
I wait till the morning’s begun
You’re lost in your lies
I can’t show you the way
You’re lost in your lies
Now I’m going away
