about
There are moments in time when we say what needs to be said.
For me, it wasn't any one moment. Instead, it was in response to a culmination of events/comments that had long since become "tired" and dated. The "voice" in this song begins with that of our First People (also includes ancient Indigenous Pre-Conquest Méxican cultures whose empires resided in large sectors now occupied by the U.S). Others, "came later." The lyric then acknowledges the plight of African people forced into slavery that were "stolen," then notes others who came "hoping for more." Resigned, this song testifies. I testify.
Dedicated to my grandson: Emir Villegas-García
lyrics
I DREAM, JUST LIKE YOU
Some of us, were already here
Many folks like you, came later
Some came stolen from their family, and friends
Others came hoping, for more
I dream, just like you
I built this “house,” just like you
I have family, just like you
And there’s nothin’
No nothin’ gonna’ ever change, that now
I may not look like you, at all
I may not think like you
Or even like you
But, we the people
Was what was agreed
Words written, in blood
I dream, just like you
I built this “house,” just like you
I have family, just like you
And there’s nothin’
No nothin’ gonna’ ever change, that now
Say these words
Remember them well
They’re the key, for us all
We the people
Was what was agreed
No need to stand, all alone
I dream, just like you
I built this “house,” just like you
I have family, just like you
And there’s nothin’
No nothin’ gonna’ change, that now
I dream, just like you
I built this “house,” just like you
I have family, just like you
And there’s nothin’
No nothin’
Nothin’ ever gonna’ change, that now
No nothin’
I’m never gonna’ let it change, back now.
